A wolf from ISIS came into the sheep to kill them one by one. We must save the wounded, comfort the LGBT and other people who are overcome with pain, fear, and loneliness from this attack, honor the dead, and protect the flock. The present moment calls for prayer and a reflection on how to decrease the manipulative use of religion to support violence. If one knows an openly gay individual or organization, a word of encouragement might be appreciated. Muslims are also feeling under attack by ISIS.
This is no mere attack on a group of individuals. It is an attack on religion and democracy. ISIS wants to make itself the dictionary definition of religion and politics. ISIS wants no democratic public square wherein every religious or secular voice has a right to be heard peacefully. Rather, ISIS wants all religions other than itself to be destroyed and all politics other than its dictatorship to be abolished. Captured by this ideology in a moment of weakness, the Orlando gunman couldn’t bear the free expression of religion and beliefs. He couldn’t bear the idea of democracy. He became a violent sensualist without heart and a religionist without spirit. This ideological nullity imagines that it is the future of the world.
