Experience the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of the Virgin Mary’s appearance at Tepeyac, a cherished tradition celebrated by the Mexican American community in the South Bronx and all across the city.
Every Dec. 12, Mexican American Catholics celebrate the Virgin Mary because they believe she appeared to a peasant at the hill of Tepeyac, near Mexico City, in the 1500s. This tradition continues with Mexican immigrants in the South Bronx, as they gather with the congregation of St. Augustine’s Catholic Church.

“Our Lady of Guadalupe is first pro-life, and she is also our Mother. What’s important in the image is that she’s pregnant; the sash that’s across her waist indicates that she’s pregnant with Jesus Christ. So these are two very important components of the feast day.”
