A Journey Through Art and Faith
Explore the Book of Esther Through Rembrandt & his Contemporaries
Discover a unique exhibition at The Jewish Museum that brings to life the Book of Esther through the eyes of Rembrandt and his contemporaries, showcasing Jewish ceremonial art from 17th-century Amsterdam.
An Exhibition of Historical Significance
This exhibition delves into the rich tapestry of the Book of Esther, a cornerstone of Jewish heritage, as interpreted by Rembrandt van Rijn and his peers. Highlighting the intersection of faith and art, the collection features rare paintings, prints, and drawings alongside ceremonial artifacts that illuminate the cultural and religious practices of 17th-century Amsterdam.

Introduction to the Exhibit
Sympathetic sharing of religious faith
In the age of Rembrandt van Rijn (1606 – 1669), the biblical Book of Esther was a key source of inspiration for Jewish & Christian communities in Holland. For the immigrant Jews living with new freedom in more tolerant Amsterdam, they were able to celebrate Purim through finely newly produced Esther scrolls and theater productions. For the Dutch Christians, Queen Esther’s heroism came to represent their emerging nation’s identity.
