Light displays in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn are now on! From 11th to 13th Avenues from 83rd to 86th St. Most of the houses turn their displays off after 9pm.

Take the D Train to 71st St, Brooklyn. However, you’ll have to walk 15 minutes to get to the houses or take the B4 bus toward Sheepshead Bay Knapp St to Bay Ridge Parkway and 12th Avenue. By car, you face little parking and heavy traffic.

You could take the R Train to 86th Street Station in Brooklyn. Here is a Google Maps link (map).

Grab a coffee, hot chocolate, a sandwich and/or water at Mocha Mocha Coffee Shop at the corner of 86th Street and 4th Ave in Brooklyn. Most importantly for some, paying customers can use their bathrooms. From Mocha Mocha, it’s approximately 15 minutes by foot to the start of the lights.

Bring some $1 and $5 with you. Many of the families who put on these displays also collect money for local charities. You may also find hot cocoa being sold on the street.

Look for the Spata house (with Santa outside, played by family members) and the Polizzotto house (with 29-foot motorized wooden soldiers). They were among the first families to begin the tradition of elaborate decorations in the neighborhood in the 1980’s.

A Slice of Brooklyn hosts a great Dyker Heights Christmas Lights tour every night in December, excluding Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. The guided tour last approximately 3.5 hours ($50–$55 for adults, Children under 12 $40–$45) and allows you to explore the houses both on foot and by bus. You can purchase tickets here, but you better get your hands on them sooner rather than later—this tour always sells out early!

There are also other good walking and bus tours.
