Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church is special because there’s nothing like dancing the Giglio, this huge monumental tradition in which men lift this 70-foot tall four-ton tower through the streets of Brooklyn. And they’ve been doing so since 1903!

Dr. Maldonado-Estrada is the author of Lifeblood of the Parish: Men and Catholic Devotion in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (NYU Press, 2020). She is an Assistant Professor of Religion at Kalamazoo College where she teaches classes on religion and masculinity, Catholics in the Americas, urban religion, and religions of Latin America.

A teacher gets together with thinkers to chat about religions.
